The Sea Scout Program

The Northeast Illinois coastline extends 41 miles along the southern reach of the western shore of Lake Michigan, from Evanston to the North Point Marina at Winthrop Harbor.  We are are fortunate to participate in the Sea Scouts program, building our youth members’ boating skills and knowledge of our maritime heritage. We are actively working to grow this dynamic program from paddles to dragon boats. Are you ready to join a ship?

Sea Scout units, called “ships,” learn the ropes of sailing and cruising sailboat and power vessels, and participate in paddle sports. During the boating season, Sea Scouts learn to maintain and operate vessels, with a focus on learning the safe and proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn about maritime safety, such as the meaning of buoys and lights, how to take advantage of wind and tide, and how to drop anchor or approach a dock.
