Kasperson Center for Scouting Blog

Check back regularly for updates and highlights of our transformation of and move to 850 Forest Edge Drive in Vernon Hills! Our new program-centered facility will be the Northeast Illinois Council’s new home.

What is the Kasperson Center for Scouting at Morrison Park?

Named in recognition of the vision that Richard & Lucinda Kasperson and the Morrison Family had for Scouting, the Kasperson Center for Scouting at Morrison Park will serve as the cornerstone for the delivery of Scouting in Northeast Illinois.  Just as the Scouting program has developed over the years, the need to support it in a robust way has also changed.  This new and larger space will allow us to add more programs and provide better customer service to our members.

The new facility will house a Scout Shop three times larger than our current store and five times as much conference and meeting space.  We will now be able to accommodate regular program offerings as well as more hands-on training opportunities to improve the delivery of the Scouting program.

Situated on a 2-acre, wooded lot, the Kasperson Center for Scouting at Morrison Park will have a camp-like feel with all the amenities and services that Vernon Hills has to offer, allowing the Northeast Illinois Council to serve Scouting with more impact and support than we ever have.

KCS Update: 4/23/18

What’s new?

Signs are up at the Kasperson Center for Scouting! We were thrilled to be able to re-purpose the lettering that sat on our 38-year home by having them sanded and restored for our new facility.

What’s happening now?

Our reporter, John Landgraf was on the scene today with an update for us. The ceiling grid is over 95% complete and the computer CAT5 is being run along with wiring for the fire system, security and camera. The drywall is primed and ready for paint, with accent walls in the offices almost done.

What’s happening this week?

We’re installing new LED lights and hope to finish the HVAC in the ceiling this week. Abbvie delivered our “new” (donated) cubicles today. These are top-of-the-line work areas with built-in electrical systems. No more extension cord trails from desk to desk! Thank you, Abbott!

What’s happening next week?

Time to install ceiling tiles as soon as we pass our inspections! Things will be starting to look great, especially outside at Morrison Park, where everything is starting to bloom! We’ll have some landscaping photos for you soon!

What’s happening now?

Things are progressing rather quickly. As you can see, painting is almost completed, and we’re installing floors today!  We’re waiting for the inspectors to come and check out the terrific work in our ceilings so that we can put our tiles up.

What’s happening next week?

Our crew will be installing fixtures and furniture for the new triple-sized Scout Shop. We can’t wait to start serving our customers there on June 2nd.  It’s going to have a lot more camping gear and an expanded selection of Scout uniforms and program supplies.

Cannot wait to see your new facilities!!

I was just wondering, since you will now be situated on 2 acres, would it be possible to hold overnight scouting events on this property? For maybe 30 or so scouts?

Hi Theresa, Sorry it took so long to respont. Although we are on two acres, most of it is heavily wooded, with little space for tents. However, we will be able to host Scouting events here at some point. We will be building a teaching shelter, fire pit, and possibly a low COPE course. Keep your eyes open for opportunities to Scout around the Kasperson Center in the future. Steph
