Advanced & Supplemental Training

In addition to Basic Leader Training, the Northeast Illinois Council and BSA National offer additional adult training to round out your scouting experience and better prepare you to serve today’s youth. Check out the options below!

OKPIK Cold Weather Preparedness

OKPIK, a high adventure training program open to Boy Scouts, Venturing Scouts, and adult leaders, is designed to develop knowledge and skills related to preparedness and survival in low temperatures. The course consists of three classroom session and one practical outdoor session. All sessions must be completed to finish the course.
The objectives of the OKPIK course are to:

1. Build confidence in the participant’s ability to camp all year round.
2. Expand each unit’s outdoor program to include cold weather activities.
3. Train experienced youth and adult leaders who can and will share the OKPIK training with their unit.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

Wilderness First Aid is a 16-hour course spread over two one-day sessions (not an overnight). WFA is the assessment of and treatment given to an ill or injured person in a remote environment where definitive care by a physician and/or rapid transport is not readily available. This course goes far beyond what you may know as “first aid.” While it contains substantial medical information and teaches skills required for medical emergencies in the wild, the deeper purpose is to train participants to manage acute situations. If your unit is planning a trek to Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, or other High Adventure bases, you are required to have two attendees certified in Wilderness First Aid. This certification must be within two years of your trek.  Participants must be at least 14 years of age and hold a current Adult CPR with AED certification from a recognized agency (such as the Red Cross, American Heart Association, or the Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI)) and present certification at the beginning of the course. Youth participants must have completed the First Aid Merit Badge. Online certifications are not accepted.

We have 3 courses each year – Check the calendar for classes in March, April and November each year.

Powder Horn High Adventure Skills Resource Course

Powder Horn is a 3-day resource management course designed to motivate and prepare older scouts and venturers as well as Venturing Advisors and Scout leaders to safely conduct high activity outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature.   Check back for more information on upcoming training dates.

Wood Badge Training

Wood Badge is Scouting’s premier adult leader training course spread over two non-consecutive overnight weekends. It is the ultimate leadership training experience designed to meet the leadership needs for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders as well as Council and District leaders and Scouting professionals. Lord Baden-Powell originally designed Wood Badge so that Scouters could learn, in as practical a way possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. It is first and foremost, learning by doing. Wood Badge has evolved into the core leadership skills training course for the BSA. The Wood Badge course focuses on strengthening every volunteer’s ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults.  Look for our Wood Badge Breakfast on the calendar for February each year.  This free breakfast is open to all and certain to spread enthusiasm!
