Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) is a hands-on training course required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to be considered fully trained. It provides the essential outdoor skills needed to lead Scouts in a safe and engaging outdoor program.
This training covers key topics such as:

Camping & Outdoor Skills – Tent pitching, cooking, and Leave No Trace principles

Navigation & Hiking – Map reading, compass use, and trail safety

Scoutcraft & Knots – Fire-building, knife and axe safety, and essential knots

Leadership & Advancement – Teaching Scouts outdoor skills and supporting rank requirements
IOLS is designed to prepare leaders to confidently guide Scouts in outdoor adventures. It is a required course for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters and is typically conducted as an overnight training experience led by experienced Scouters.
